Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae disease assessment and identification of risk factors through the evaluation of the lung-score in the Italian heavy weight pigs.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 2:216
This Italian study aimed to assess a quantitative scoring method for the evaluation of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae-related lung lesions, and to determine which farm risk factors could induce an increase in the onset and severity of those lesions. A total of 10,041 fattened pigs was selected for the study. Lung lesions were assessed (scoring system defined by Madec and Kobisch) after slaughter. Several parameters were also analysed in order to define the potential risk factors for increased prevalence and severity of lung lesions. The quantitative scoring method appeared to be a reliable tool for the assessment of lung lesions in heavy-weight pigs. The risk factors identified were related to the presence of breeders in the herd, the growing cycle starting in the winter season and the lack of vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
