Protection of piglets against a PCV2 experimental challenge by vaccinating gilts with an inactivated adjuvanted PCV2 vaccine, CIRCOVAC®: serological, clinical and pathological aspects.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 1:176
The objective of this study was to determine whether sow vaccination against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) with CIRCOVAC® (Merial) could result in a good protection of their piglets. PCV2-free SPF gilts, were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group was vaccinated and the other was used as control group. Piglets born to sows of both groups, were challenged with PCV2 at three to four weeks of age. Clinical manifestations were then monitored. PCV2 ORF2 ELISA antibodies were assessed and a necropsy was performed. The results showed that vaccination with CIRCOVAC® did confer a high level of protection to piglets born to vaccinated sows, by reducing clinical manifestations and lesions related to PCV2 infection.
