Virological protection of piglets against a PCV2 experimental challenge by vaccinating gilts with an inactivated adjuvant PCV2 vaccine.

This study focused on the impact of sow vaccination with CIRCOVAC® (Merial) on their piglets, challenged with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) at 3 to 4 weeks of age. PCV2-free SPF gilts were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group was vaccinated and the other was used as control group. Piglets born to sows of both groups, were challenged with PCV2 at three to four weeks of age. Serum and rectal swabs were analyzed and viral loads assessed using a quantitative PCR. Piglets were necropsied 4 weeks post challenge and mesenteric lymph nodes studied to determine the presence of PCV2 using immunohistochemistry. The results showed that vaccination of the gilts with CIRCOVAC® did confer a high level of protection to piglets born to vaccinated sows, by reducing PCV2 replication in those piglets.
