PMWS protection of pigs born to sows vaccinated with an inactivated PCV2 vaccine under field conditions.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 2:107
The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of sow vaccination with CIRCOVAC® (Merial) vaccine on their piglets. In postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)-affected herds, sows were vaccinated or kept as control. A significant decrease in the mortality due to PMWS was observed in piglets. Three-day-old piglets were weaned and moved to an isolation facility. During 3 weeks, the presence of PCV2 was monitored individually in their feces using a qualitative PCR. The percentage of piglets showing virus in their feces was significantly lower in the group of those born to vaccinated sows. All piglets were further challenged with PCV2 and the piglets born to vaccinated sows had very significantly less PCV2-related lesions than the piglets born to control sows indicating a high level of protection by CIRCOVAC vaccination of the dams.
