PCR detection of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) DNA in blood, tonsillar and faecal swabs from experimentally infected pigs.
Research in Veterinary Science, 2006, 81, 287-292
The aim of this study was to assess the presence of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) DNA in various biological fluids and the relevance of PCR detection in pigs challenged with PCV2. Twelve pigs were challenged with PCV2. Clinical signs of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) were then monitored and blood samples collected regularly and analysed. After necropsy, histopathological and immunofluorescence the results were compared with those obtained with the PCR analysis. The comparison showed that PCR could be a useful tool to confirm an early diagnosis of PMWS but that it was not reliable enough to be used alone (instead of conventional methods).
