Relationship between piglet PRRS seroprevalence at the end of nursery and reproduction disorders due to PRRS in sows.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 1:54
The relationship between the prevalence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in piglets between 3 and 12 weeks of age and PRRS reproductive disorders in sows were investigated. Nineteen Italian farms (with sows having PRRS antibodies, the nursery run in continuous flow and no PRRSV vaccine or PRRSV vaccinated animals) were included in the study. PRRSV antibodies were detected in piglets thanks to an IDEXX® ELISA test. The results showed that in case of reproductive disorders, a higher proportion of piglets were PCR-positive at 9-10 weeks of age (>20%). For this reason, piglets can be used the nursery period as sentinels for the presence of reproductive problems caused by PRRSV in sows.
