Systemic cytokine productions in pigs vaccinated with a modified live PRRS vaccine and challenged with Thai PRRSV isolates.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 2:42
The objective of this study was to determine the quantity of systemic cytokine producing cells in pigs vaccinated with a modified live vaccine (MLV) against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) when infected with virulent PRRSV strains. PRRSV-negative pigs were vaccinated with AMERVAC® (Hipra) twice. Pigs were then infected with either homologous or heterologous PRRSV strains. Blood samples were collected at different time points of the study and PBMC were cultured. Intracellular cytokine staining (IL-10 and IFN-γ), flow cytometry and statistical analyses were carried out. Viruses were isolated and characterized (EU and US strains). Vaccination with the MLV EU strain enhanced the production of IL-10 producing cells when pigs were infected with the heterologous PRRSV strain.
