Long-term administration of a commercial porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-inactivated vaccine in PRRSV-endemically infected sows.
Journal of Veterinary Medicine, 2006, B 53, 266-272
The objective of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of sow vaccination with PROGRESSIS® (Merial) when administered on a long-term basis (18 months) in a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)-positive pig herd. A farrow-to-finish PRRSV-positive farm was selected for the study. Sows were vaccinated twice, and then received booster injections at each gestation. Reproductive and litter characteristics were monitored before and during the course of the trial. Blood samples were collected and tested for PRRSV antibodies (immunoperoxidase monolayer assay - IPMA) and statistical analyses were carried out. The results indicated that the vaccine was safe and that it had significantly positive effects on reproductive functions and litter characteristics.
