Pig characteristics associated with mortality and light exit weight for the nursery phase.
Canadian Veterinary Journal, 2006, Volume 47, pp 560-566
The objective of this study was to define parameters that could be used to assess the propensity of piglets to die in the nursery or to be a lightweight pig at the end of the nursery phase. The aim was to find reliable parameters that could help pig producers improving pig performances. Weaned pigs from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)-positive farms were selected for the study. Various parameters were taken into account for the analyses carried out during the trial, including but not limited to birth weight, weaning weight, barrow, etc. This study permitted defining reliable prognostic indicators for the identification of weaker pigs likely to die or to be lightweight at the end of the nursery phase. These criteria may be useful in the improvement of the herd's performances.
