Stress biology in the pig.
The Pig Journal, 2006, 57, 8-29
It is well known that stress caused by external or internal stimuli can negatively affect pig welfare. This usually results in increased mortality and deterioration of reproductive functions, thus causing major economic losses. The stress felt by pigs triggers various biological responses that will have an impact on various functions of its organism. This paper describes these biological responses, providing information likely to be useful in the evaluation of pig welfare. Understanding better these mechanisms can help pig producers managing the stress response more efficiently.
