Distinction between Porcine Circovirus Type 2 Enteritis and Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy caused by Lawsonia intracellularis.

Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2006, Volume 135, Nº4, 176-182

The purpose of this study was to define intestinal porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infection and assess its importance as a differential diagnosis in pigs with a history of diarrhoea or enteritis. Archived intestinal samples were used in this studied and tested for Lawsonia intracellularis, PCV2 and other bacteria. The results showed that PCV2-induced enteritis was a major differential diagnosis for L. intracellularis infection in pigs with a clinical history of diarrhea. It was also shown that both infections were similar but could be differentiated thanks to histopathological examinations.
