Bien-être du porc. Le point de vue de l'économiste de l'élevage.
Bulletin de l'Académie Vétérinaire de France, 2006, Volume 159, Nº3, 205-212
Animal welfare has become important for European consumers and the European Union answered this demand by introducing the notion of animal welfare in the pig production system. These new regulations recommend several changes in pig farms, resulting in increased costs for pig producers and consumers, without significantly improving pig meat quality. It should also be noted that European pig meat thus becomes less competitive compared to pig meat coming from non-EU countries where pig producers are not subjected to the same regulations and can thus produce cheaper products. The implementation of such production changes should therefore be well thought and organised in order to keep the pig meat EU market competitive.
