Protein variability among M. hyopneumoniae isolates.
Veterinary Microbiology, 2007, Volume 120, 284-291

Fifty-six M. hyopneumoniae isolates from 6 different countries and 37 different herds were submitted to gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in order to investigate their protein variability. No isolate resulted similar to another one originating from a different herd and a high heterogeneity between the various M. hyopneumoniae isolates was found since this method allowed to detect up to 30% protein variability between them. Interestingly, two highly virulent isolates were shown to have a 181-kDa protein band in common which could not be detected in moderately and low virulent isolates. Moreover, though the presence of several isolates was detected in 21.6% of the herds (8/37), the isolates originating from the same herd showed very low protein variations. While the great protein variability between the isolates investigated in this study confirm the high heterogeneity of this species, the fact that the isolates collected in the same herd be very similar indicates that mainly one strain of M. hyopneumoniae circulates in each single herd at a given time, which may yet modify its protein profile under field condition pressure.
