HARDING JCS
Porcine circovirus diseases (PCVD): the brutal facts.
American Association of Swine Veterinarians - Proceedings, 2007, 349-352
With this paper, John CS Harding clearly wants to make North American swine veterinarians sit up and take notice of the actual impact of porcine circovirus diseases (PCVD). According to JCS Harding, North American swine veterinarians are way behind their European colleagues regarding PCV2 research and understanding. The author deplores the way North American veterinarians underestimate the PCVD issue in favor of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) and lack of a true scientific approach when faced with information regarding PCV2. More time and money should be spent for PCV2 research, which should be more innovating and better fit the "multi-pathogen paradigm" of PCVD. Moreover, JCS Harding underlines the responsibility of the current production systems in the exacerbation of disease and enhancement of pathogen evolution to higher virulence and he further claims that eradication is not the right strategy to develop to address PCVD issue.
