Classical Swine Fever

SURADHAT S, DAMRONGWATANAPOKIN S, THANAWONGNUWECH R
Factors critical for successful vaccination against classical swine fever in endemic areas.
Veterinary Microbiology, 2007, Volume 119, Nº1, 1-9

In the last decade, Thailand has experienced an increased occurrence of subacute and chronic classical swine fever (CSF) outbreaks, more than half of them being due to the newly emerged genogroup 2.2 of CSF virus. Challenge studies were thus carried out and confirmed the efficacy of commercially available modified live CSF vaccines. However, prevention and control programs do not only rely on the efficacy of the vaccine and other factors such as maternal derived antibodies, age of primary vaccination, vaccination protocol and secondary infections (in particular PRRSV infection) influence the success of vaccination. In order to avoid vaccine failure, it is thus critical to have a well-defined picture of the herd epidemiological and immune status and apply the most appropriate vaccination protocol.
