SPES (Slaughterhouse pleurisy evaluation system) proposta per un nuovo approccio ispettivo delle lesioni polmonari in sede di macellazione [SPES (slaughterhouse pleurisy evaluation system) proposal for a new approach for pleurisy detection at slaughterhouse].
Società Italiana di Patologia ed Allevamento dei Suini - Proceedings, 2007, 131-139
At the slaughterhouse, pleurisy can be evaluated by means of the slaughterhouse pleurisy evaluation system (SPES). Lungs are scored from 0 to 4 considering the presence, the extent and the localization of the lesions. In this study, 1834 lungs from 11 batches originating from 9 herds were scored with the SPES. Pigs originating from herds vaccinating against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and/or M. hyopneumoniae had significantly lower mean SPES scores compared to unvaccinated pigs. Interestingly, the highest scores were obtained in pigs coming from herds with mild respiratory disorders. In that case, the SPES proved more reliable than clinical signs for defining the impact of respiratory disease on the herd. The evaluation of lung lesions at slaughter thus represents an additional and useful source of information to assess the efficacy of the control measures implemented at the herd level.
