Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) multisystemic infection, atrophic rhinitis and enteric salmonellosis in 3-month old pigs in Pennsylvania
Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Emerging and Re-emerging Pig Diseases, 2007, 65
Several 3-month old pigs from a Pennsylvanian pig farm were affected with anorexia, respiratory distress and diarrhea. The aim of this study was therefore to identify and characterize the lesions observed in those pigs, to define PCV2 distribution and investigate the presence of any other pathogen. Three piglets were necropsied and various examinations conducted (histochemistry, histopathology, indirect immunohistochemistry, direct fluorescent immunohistochemistry, PCR, electron microscopy). The results confirmed that PCV2 was the main pathogen in these pigs. The results also confirmed that the pigs were affected by enteritis caused by Salmonella spp. and atrophic rhinitis, which did not seem to be related to PCV2-infection.
