PCV2 dynamics in PMWS positive herds
Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Emerging and Re-emerging Pig Diseases, 2007, 46
This study focused on PCV2 dynamics in serum, faeces and nasal secretions of pigs in 10 PMWS-affected herds. Serum samples were collected from 10 sows (one from each herd) and serum, nasal and rectal swabs were collected from piglets born to these sows. Piglets presenting signs of PMWS were necropsied. Samples were tested for PCV2 using a real-time PCR. Samples from the sows did not show presence of PCV2, while most of the piglets showed a development of PCV2 over time. The results showed that PCV2 could be detected in nasal swabs weeks before being detected in faeces and serum, thus suggesting that nasal shedding might be significant in the transmission of the infection. This study confirmed that PCV2 was able to replicate at a high level in pigs in a PMWS-affected herd but that some pigs may be subclinically affected because they are able to cope with the infection better.
