Porcine circovirus 2 replication in colostrum-deprived piglets following experimental infection and immune stimulation using a modified live vaccine against porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus

Zoonoses and Public Health, 2007, Volume 54, 214-222

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a modified live vaccine (MLV) against PRRSV on PCV2 infection and PCV2-related lesions and symptoms in colostrum-deprived piglets challenged with PCV2. A total of 24 PCV2 and PRRSV-free piglets were selected for the study and assigned to 3 different groups. Pigs from group 1 were infected with PCV2 and then vaccinated with the MLV-PPRSV. Pigs from group 2 were infected with PCV2 only. Lastly, pigs from the third group were kept as controls and only vaccinated with the MLV-PRRSV. Piglets were monitored throughout the study in order to detect PMWS clinical signs. Serum samples, faecal and tonsil swabs were collected on a regular basis and analysed for anti-PCV2 and PRRSV antibodies. At the end of the study (25 days post-inoculation), all pigs were necropsied and tissue samples tested for the presence of PCV2 and PRRSV antigens. The results of this study suggest that vaccinating piglets with an MLV-PRRSV may enhance PCV2 infection in these piglets.
