Ontogeny of systemic cellular immunity in the neonatal pig: Correlation with the development of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome
Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2007, Volume 119, 254-268

The purpose of this prospective case-control study was to assess the changes that occur in PBMC in the first 8 weeks of life of conventional pigs, which did or did not develop PMWS afterwards, in order to better understand the aetiopathogenesis of PMWS. A total of 125 neonatal piglets were included in the study and blood samples were collected weekly during 8 weeks. Multi-colour flow cytometric analyses were carried out to investigate the changes in PBMC. The results showed that the development of PMWS tended to be associated with higher levels of lymphocyte activation, before clinical signs actually appear, suggesting that lymphocyte activation may trigger the development of this disease.
