PRRSV persistence: Lessons from the big pig experiment
Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, 2007, 92-93
The aim of the present longitudinal study was to better define the proportion of pigs persistently infected with PRRSV. A total of 109 pigs were inoculated with PRRSV, while 56 other pigs were kept as controls. PRRSV was detected in tissues and serum with RT-qPCR, standard virus isolation and bioassay. The results showed that PRRSV viraemia persisted in a greater proportion of pigs and for a longer period of time than initially thought, i.e. 2-7% of the pigs up to 154 days post infection (DPI) and that the virus could be found in lymphoid tissue up to 202 DPI.
