Mechanisms of porcine diarrheal disease
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2007, Volume 231, Nº1, 56-67
This paper is a review of the current knowledge of the basic mechanisms of enteric diseases in pigs (which could also apply to other species). The authors first describe the general organisation of the intestinal mucosa, and then explain the mechanisms underlying ion transport across the intestinal epithelium (intestinal secretion/absorption). They stress on the capacity of specific enteric pathogens to modify these intestinal ion transport and fluid movements. The last part of this paper is dedicated to the pathophysiologic mechanisms of diarrhoeal diseases in pigs.
