Veterinary vaccines for public health and prevention of viral and bacterial zoonotic diseases
Revue Scientifique et Technique de l’Office International des Épizooties, 2007, Volume 26, Nº1, 165-177
As the risk of transmission of a disease from animals to humans is important, especially in the case of farmed animals, efficient control strategies are needed to reduce it. In this paper, the authors review some zoonotic bacterial and viral diseases for which some effective vaccines could be developed. The authors review the recent progress that was made in molecular biology and immunology and explain how these technologies could be used to develop efficient vaccines aiming at preventing human diseases by vaccination of animals. The authors then give some recommendations about vaccination or vaccine development against major diseases such as rabies, avian influenza or food-borne diseases.
