Relationship between growth during the fattening period and lung lesions at slaughter in swine
Revue de Médecine Vétérinaire, 2007, Volume 158, Nº5, 253-259
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of lung lesions on pig growth on almost 7,000 pigs at slaughter. The data used in this study proceeded from 6 clinical trials conducted between 1998 and 2006 and were collected from 14 farms in Brittany (France). Those pigs were individually identified in the farms, weighed (the Average Daily Weight Gain - ADWG - was calculated for the fattening period) and scored at slaughter (two different scores were used: one for pneumonia and another one for pleurisy). The results showed that, at the farm and individual levels, a significant negative correlation existed between the prevalence of pneumonia and pig growth. This shows the importance of respiratory diseases in pig production.
