Carcass condemnation causes of growth retarded pigs at slaughter
The Veterinary Journal, 2007, Volume 174, 160-164
The objectives of this Spanish study were to determine the causes of carcass condemnation of growth retarded pigs at slaughter, to define the pathogens responsible for the lesions observed in those pigs and have a better understanding of the pathology affecting them. A total of 6,017 growth-retarded pigs were used in this study. Those pigs were slaughtered between 2003 and 2004. Lesions were localised and analysed whenever possible. Microbiological and histopathological analyses were carried out. The results showed that 8.5% of these growth-retarded pig carcasses were totally condemned (which represented a direct economic loss of 30,000 €). This study also showed that abscesses, cachexia, catharral bronchopneumonia, vertebral osteomyelitis, arthritis, pleuritis, peritonitis and pleuropneumonia were the main causes for carcass condemnation. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was found to be the main pathogen isolated from abscesses, osteomyelitis and arthritis (which represented most of the lesions observed).
