In 1974, a new virus was discovered in a continuous porcine kidney cell line (PK-15).1 Because of its circular DNA genome, the name porcine circovirus (PCV) was proposed.2 This first identified porcine circovirus (now known as PCV1) was found to be widespread in the pig population at that time and was non-pathogenic for pigs.
