Finnish Landrace
The Finnish Landrace has a very similar origin to that of the other Landrace strains of northern Europe. Native stock was crossed with the improved strains of Landrace that were introduced from the other countries, particularly those of the Scandinavian neighbours. While similar to other Landrace, with their white colour and heavy, drooping ears, the breed found in Finland is characterized by an extreme trimness. As a result of this they have been imported as seedstock to many other countries that depend heavily on Landrace in their swine producing industry. Due to this, the Finnish Landrace can be found throughout Northern Europe in greater numbers than other Landrace breeds. Swine production of Finland has a lot of emphasis on farm testing to improve the stock. While the swine improvement program of Finland is relatively new, it has worked very well with the swine producers of the country. Assistance is given the swine farmers in their breeding programs and in their herd bookkeeping.
The average weight of the Finnish Landrace at slaughter is 350-375lbs (160-170 kg). The Finnish Landrace Pig breed has an average to large-sized body. The Finnish Landrace Pig average mature weight for sows is 450-600 pounds (204-272 kg) and the average weight for boars is 500-700lbs (226-318 kg).
