Actions taken to protect U.S. from FMD outbreak

US - What's being done to prevent it from entering the United States?

Preventative measures include stationing USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service veterinarians overseas to monitor FMD and to provide information and resources to help other countries control and eradicate the disease.

When there's an FMD outbreak, APHIS begins regulatory action to stop the United States from importing specific live animals and animal products from FMD-affected countries.

Cargo entering the country with animal products and animal byproducts is screened when it enters the country.

People coming into the United States must report if they recently visited a farm or other livestock facilities and declare all food items and other material of plant or animal origin.
