Print This Page South Africa Reports FMD Outbreak in Cattle
SOUTH AFRICA - The veterinary authorities have informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle.The South Africa veterinary authority set an Immediate Notification to OIE dated 9 September.
The report describes one outbreak of FMD in a herd of 727 village cattle at Mbombela in Mpumalanga in the the east of the country. On 6 September, six of the cattle were identified as having the disease at a dip tank in a rural settlement adjacent to the FMD Infected Zone (Kruger National Park) on the border between the FMD Buffer Zone and the FMD Infected Zone.
The FMD virus has been identified.
The last outbreak of FMD in the country was in December 2008.
