FMD Counter-Measures Must Succeed This Time
15 February 2011SOUTH KOREA - On 15 February, the government announced comprehensive measures to prevent environmental pollution in the areas where the slain cattle and pigs were dumped in the wake of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) across the country.
The measures are centered on monitoring the burial sites and surrounding areas using up-to-date devices and introducing a soil contamination warning system to prevent pollution of the areas by leachate, according to Yonhap.
The measures call for a systematic monitoring of groundwater quality around the roughly 4,600 burial sites. The government will conduct water quality surveys for 3,000 wells within a 300-meter radius of the burial sites.
