Venezuela Tightens FMD Restrictions
12 January 2012VENEZUELA - The Ranchers Federation of Venezuela demanded that the government suspends the import of meat and livestock from Paraguay, following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
The AmericaEconomia reports that the union said FMD could threaten product production in the country.
Therefore, farmers have demanded that the Venezuelan health authorities issue a statement on the new FMD outbreak.
"It's the second time that an outbreak of the disease has occurred in a short time in Paraguay and the government has not stopped it. All imports of meat and by-products should therefore be cut immediately," said union president, Manuel Cipriano Heredia.
He also explained that the virus poses no risk to humans, but endangers the Venezuelan cattle.
Venezuela is one of Paraguay's customers who decided to continue the purchase of meat, despite the crisis triggered by the animal disease.
