We are raising pigs for the county fair. This is only our 3rd year ... with no prior experience with pigs...
One pig...about 2 months of age and about 60 pounds...has developed wart like bumps on his legs, belly and behind ears. They seem to itch really bad. None of the othe pigs have this spots, but some do seem to stop and itch their sides and butts. Could this be Swine Pox ? only thing I have found on-line that comes close. They are bedded with clean wheat straw...manure is scrapped out daily...but the straw appears dry and we have left that to build up...Any suggestions ? Beginner needs help! Thanks for listening. |

Is this preventable ?
Have vet coming this morning. What should we do differently, this year and years to come.. Can this be assisted by a regular worming schedule and can you over worm ? |

Mange is a minute skin parasite which is easily treated with various injectable ie Ivermectin, which also covers Lice and worms in one shot. I personal don't believe its that though, as I have never seen warts on a pigs skin from Mange. I wouldn't be 100% from your description as to what it was?? They wouldn't be red like raised diamond shape pumps by any chance??? If it was this then it would be Erysipelas or may be a Straphlycoccus infection possibly?? For both of these you would need antibiotic to treat it not Ivermectin. Let us know what the yet come up with as I would be very interested in the answer. If it were Mange then you would need to treat all your pigs with Ivermectin, then a repeat injection 18 days later. |

Vet came out late sat. Is not sure, took some tissue samples, gave antibiotics and kept isolated till they dried up. By Sunday morning, they were all dried up and scabby looking. Other than spots pig seems 100 percent healthy. Did dose everyone with Ivermec, as others did appear to itch their sides and bellies, but no spots like this one.
Can pigs get Food allergies ? Friend gave the group some out dated protein bars, that she wanted to toss...? |

We are trying to get the exact vaccines from the breeder. The vet gave a dose of antibiotics and we did Ivermic and will repeat the Ivermic in 3 to 4 weeks. We are also going to do a second round of vacinations to be sure. Any suggetions as to which ones would be best, as we are very new at this..Thanks for everyones help !
