Salmonella test results in under a day
A new testing kit for Salmonella promises to deliver results in less than a day. UK-based Biotrace International claims its Tecra Unique Salmonella test provides a simple and rapid method to detect Salmonella spp. in food and environmental samples in less than 22 hours.

Pig industry activists throw down the gauntlet
The British Pig Industry Support Group which regularly blockaded supermarkets and distribution depots in the late 1990s has been reformed, reports FWi. The group claims there is growing evidence that supermarkets are significantly increasing the amount of imported pig meat they sell, which is produced in ways that would be illegal in the UK.

Meat Hygiene Service Strike Action Deferred by Unison
Meat Hygiene Service inspectors will be at work at meat plants this week after threatened strike was called off. It had been feared that abattoirs across the country would be forced to close because of planned action by Unison members, but a deferment was announced late on Friday.

Grampian axe Suffolk pork plant
UK - Grampian Country Food has announced plans to close its Elmswell pork factory near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, with the loss of 380 jobs. The plant processed pig meat into sausages, hams and other products but did not kill pigs.

United Kingdom Prices Below Europe Average
At long last firmer EU pigmeat prices are starting to filter through to the British market report Trafficlights. The DAPP has now fallen to its lowest level since January 2005 and is quoted at 99.75p which means that many contract base prices are also lower.

Organic market crying out for 'every part of pig'
British pig farmers are missing a golden opportunity to go organic and supply the growing premium section of the market in exchange for a healthy margin, says one of the country's biggest organic producer. The MD of Eastbrook Farms Organic Meat says the organic market is crying out for every part of the pig. "There is an acute shortage building up, which means we can't do everything we want to do with the business.

Manitoban Pork producers told future is bright
Despite hog producers having a difficult time bringing home the bacon these days, Manitoba Pork believe there is some sizzle on the horizon. They pointed to the likely lowering of Canadian grain tariffs, the construction of a new hog slaughter facility in Winnipeg by hog business giant OlyWest. But the brightest point is the view of Canada’s pork industry as part of a larger North American industry they said.

Nanoparticles Could Reduce Gas Emissions from Swine Manure
Researchers at the Prairie Swine Centre are hoping to apply the emerging science of nanotechnology to the reduction of odor and gaseous emissions from swine manure. In an effort to improve health and safety, the scientists are exploring several options for reducing primarily hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, from swine manure.

Red Ink Looming For Summer Sold Hogs
In their weekly review of the US hog industry, Glenn Grimes and Ron Plain report that conditions in the hog industry are too similar to 2002 for comfort. In 2002, hog farmers had near record production and very strong competition because of smaller poultry exports. In 2006, record high production and bird flu has created a similar situation.

Hog Industry In Iowa Logs 26th Month of Profit
With 26 consecutive months of profits, Iowa hog producers may be nearing a record for good times. John Lawrence, an Iowa State University economist, said that if hog producers resist over-expansion during the rest of this year and if corn prices don't rise too high, profits in the hog industry should continue until October.

The “Plan for 2025” released last year by the Indiana Department of Agriculture outlined objectives for further developing agribusiness. One worthy goal was to double pork production in Indiana during the next 20 years by better managing animal wastes on hog farms through the use of new technologies.

Urgent Biosecurity Measures Called For
The NZ Pork Industry Board is urging pork producers to apply stringent biosecurity measures on their farms to help prevent the spread of PMWS. They said there were two key courses of action which would help reduce the risk of infection. The first relates to the movement of pigs and the second to the feeding of pigs.

China's Piglet Prices Generally Lower
In this weeks China Piglet Market Weekly, eFeedLink report that China's piglet prices were generally lower in the week ending Mar 30. In China's main hog production regions, few piglet purchasing activities were seen and in some regions, as much as 50 percent of farms are reported to no longer carry hog inventories.

China Live Hog Prices Move Lower
In their Hog Market Weekly, eFeedLink report that live hog prices in China continued to move lower during the week ending Mar 27, except for Sichuan province where prices edged higher. As most slaughterhouses preferred procuring native mixed-breed hogs and native dual-breed hogs, prices of better quality lean hogs fell.

China's Green Push Starts At The Bottom
Liajiang is rural China at its most pristine, with families living in traditional courtyard houses and working the fertile land at the foot of the jagged and snow-capped Yulong mountain. The pigs who live with them inevitably produce a lot of muck but the energy it contains is being put to good use. There it stews, brewing methane gas which flows along a small rubber pipe directly into the kitchen stove. For these families, there's no need for firewood and a good deal less smoke.

ACMC sets up first Scottish multiplier unit
Scotland's first multiplier unit for international pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd, is being established this month by well-known pig farmer, Paul Duxbury and family, from Rothienorman, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. It is anticipated the unit will produce 3,000 gilts a year for both the UK and rapidly-growing overseas markets.

Demand Brisk in Canada for New Porcine Circovrus Type 2 Vaccine
Merial Canada reports demand for its newly released vaccine which protects baby pigs from the ravages of Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome has been brisk in Canada. Last month Merial Canada was granted a special permit for the import of Circovac, a vaccine which is administered to the sow to protect her offspring against Porcine Circovirus Type 2, the primary pathogen considered responsible for Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome.
