Foot And Mouth Disease In The UK - Summary
On Thursday it was reported that a leaking pipe was the likeliest source of the foot-and-mouth outbreak. This led to furious criticism of the Health and Safety Executive, who maintain overall responsibility for the site.

In total, five bio-security breaches were pin-pointed by the HSE report that released the next day. Despite Hilary Benn's protest that "every possible precaution" was being taken to prevent this from happening again, it came as no surprise that many farmers asked for the Pirbright site to remain closed.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, a slaughterhouse was closed because of fears that a cow had contracted the disease.
