Bill to Cut Down Ethanol Tariff Announced
US - Senators Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, and Judd Gregg, a New Hampshire Republican, introduced legislation this week (S. 3080) to lower the tariff to on imported ethanol to bring it in line with U.S. ethanol blending subsidies, which a recently enacted farm bill lowered to 45 cents per gallon from 51 cents per gallon.

USDA: National Pork Board Appointments Announced
US - Deputy Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner has announced the five appointments to the 15-member National Pork Board (Board) from the National Pork Producers Council's 20th Annual World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa.

Feed Costs, Availability to Determine Pork Prices
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Retail prices of pork will rise and some pork producers will go out of business because of current crop conditions and subsequent feed availability issues, the National Pork Producers Council today warned the U.S. Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee during a meeting on rising food prices.

Pigs Raised Without Antibiotics Likely to Carry Bacteria, Parasites
US - While the demand for pork produced without antibiotics increases, new studies have shown that such pigs are prone to carrying bacteria and parasites connected with food-borne ailments.

Is Grain Really Fuelling a Global Depression?
US - The argument over just how much the price of grain is affecting world food prices has reached a new level. Some contend that it is really the high price of fuel that is driving food costs upward. One report said that it couldn't be the price of grain because "there is only about six cents worth of corn in an 18-ounce box of corn flakes".

April Pork Exports Outdo Previous Record
US - U.S. pork continues to shine in the export market, eclipsing the previous one-month record by nearly 12 percent to reach 175,640 metric tons (387.2 million pounds) of pork and pork variety meat valued at $391.5 million in April. The previous record of 156,959 metric tons (346 million pounds) was set in February.

NIST: Crude 'Oil' from Pig Manure
US - After studying crude oil from pig manure, NIST's (National Institute of Standards and Technology) chemists have come to a series of conclusions, one of them being that it "smells worse than manure", to quote NIST chemist Tom Bruno.
