Welcome to this week's newsletter
We at ThePigSite would like to welcome our new partner Hermitage Genetics.
We have 5 new features this week:
How are Breeders Helping to Reduce Emissions?
Past genetic improvements have significantly contributed to a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) per unit of animal product, and breeding remains an important tool in further reductions. These key points were made by Dr Huw Jones of Genesis Faraday at the most recent JSR Genetics Technical Conference, reports Jackie Linden for ThePigSite.
NBAF: Securing a Threat, or Threatening a Security?
After months of deliberation, Manhattan, Kansas, has been chosen as the location of the new US National Bio and Agro-Defence Facility (NBAF), writes Adam Anson, reporting for ThePigSite. What actions will this new facility undertake, and what consequences will there be for the future of American agriculture?
Factors Influencing Litter Size and Birth Weight
By Hypor. The production of large litters of high quality piglets with good, even birth weights is an important aspect of maximizing Weaning Capacity because it results in the highest number and weight of piglets weaned. Attention to the areas of management discussed below will help to achieve this goal.
New Opportunities for Reproductive Management
Reducing the number of piglets in which replacement gilts and boars are raised is one way to improve the longevity and productivity of future breeding stock. William L. Flowers of North Carolina State University explained why at the London Swine Conference 2008.
Bacitracin — Natural Peptide with Minimal Resistance Issues
