Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial: Co-operation - the key to success
ThePigSite editor, Jackie Linden, attended the annual meeting of the British Society of Animal Science last week. The somewhat disappointing attendance did not detract from the high standard of many of the papers, several of which we will report in the coming weeks.
An informative and entertaining presentation was made by Professor David Hughes of Imperial College, London, at a BPEX event last month, also attended by Jackie and reported in the article 'If my business was a pig farm..' Drawing on his expertise in food marketing, Professor Hughes' key messages for pig producers were to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your business compared to your neighbours' and other competitors, and to co-operate with others to get closer to consumers. Good advice, whatever your business.
On the disease front, there are new reports of swine fever in Russia, and foot and mouth disease in Taiwan.
Owing to the forthcoming Easter holiday, the next newsletter from ThePigSite will be distributed on Tuesday 14 April. Jackie Linden
