US sows - numbers down and welfare going whither?

Back from Easter Holidays, we are faced with the news that the total stock of all pigs in the US has dropped by three per cent since March 2008, according to the latest US Hogs and Pigs Census. At 6.01 million, the breeding herd is also down by three per cent over the same period.

A new report from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology attempts to give a scientific assessment of the welfare of pregnant sows kept in stalls compared to those that are group-housed. Faced with a lack of good data, the authors of the report conclude what many of us in the industry fear – that there is a danger of regulation moving ahead of the science. Making decisions based on limited evidence may have significant consequences to the health of sows and piglets, the cost of pork production and the availability and price of pork products, without achieving its main purpose – the significant improvement of sow welfare.
