Editorial: H1N1 flu and global plans for FMD and disaster relief
The new issue of Whole Hog highlights that media reports and the internet chat-line, Twitter, on the current influenza A H1N1 flu scare are having a serious effect on the pig industry and prices around the world. This has happened despite the fact that the virus has only been found on one farm so far, and reassurances from reputable food safety agencies that pig meat is quite safe to eat.
On the disease front, international experts on Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) have agreed on a plan to control the infection in Western Eurasia and stop it spreading west to Europe and North Africa, following a serious epidemic in several Middle Eastern countries. The FAO's plan was approved at a recent meeting in Rome. It offers a far-reaching strategy designed to put an end to the devastating disease in 14 West Asian and Middle East countries most directly affected.
Another much-needed advance also came from the FAO in the last week: Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) have been published to help co-ordinate the efforts of the many agencies following major catastrophes and thus protect the livelihoods of vulnerable livestock keepers.
