Welfare: theme of this week's news

Welfare issues have hit the headlines this week, particularly following the initial publicity and reactions to a TV programme visiting a New Zealand farm where sows are kept in (legal) crates. For consumers who have become detached from how their food is produced, these revelations are greeted with outrage and demands for something to be done. In the latest case, there are calls for the Prime Minister himself to become involved in a ban on sow crates.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that free-range pig farmers in New Zealand have this week called for mandatory country of origin labelling (COOL) for their pork products in future.

In the same week, Maine has become the sixth US state to ban the use of gestation crates for sows from 2011.

Shocked by scenes of inhumane killing of pigs in Egypt - as an unwise and unfounded measure to control the spread of H1N1 influenza - the OIE has called for global standards on the humane killing of livestock. And the FAO has launched a new web site on livestock welfare.

* This Week's Feature Articles

We have 5 new features this week:

Piglet Survival: New Thinking on an Old Problem
There are a number of causes of mortality in piglets before weaning, and the best way to reduce losses will depend on the main causes on the particular farm. Dr Emma Baxter is a post-doctoral research scientist Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) whose thesis investigated some indicators of piglet survival. Jackie Linden, editor of ThePoultrySite, summarises Dr Baxter's presentation at the BPEX Knowledge Transfer Event, Change for Success, earlier this year.
Important Pen Features and Management in Farrowing Pens for Loose-Housed Sows
Among the topics covered are the provision of nesting material, floor heating, farrowing rails and space requirements of sows and their litters. Lene J. Pedersen of the University of Aarhus, Denmark, reviewed this topic at Housing of Farrowing and Lactating Sows in Non-Crate Systems, a conference held in Copenhagen in June 2008.
Genetics Influence Growth Rate Response to Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) Vaccines
The data in this study suggest that genetic background affects either the expression of porcine circovirus disease (PCVD) or the response to the PCV2 vaccine, as measured by growth performance. This is the main finding from a study reported by M.L. Potter of Kansas State University and colleagues to the 2008 Kansas Swine Day.
Transport Losses in Finishing Pigs
This paper was prepared by Cate Dewey, Charles Haley, Zvonimir Poljak, Bob Friendship and Tina Widowski of the University of Guelph for the 2009 Centralia Swine Research Update.
