Editorial: New Environmental Legislation, FMD and H1N1
At the end of last week, the US House of Representatives approved legislation that will allow farmers, ranchers and forest owners to fully participate in a market-based carbon offset programme, earning income for activities they undertake to address global climate change.
The bill was supported by a number of farmer associations, including National Pork Producers and National Farmers Union, whose chairman commented: "While not perfect, the House-passed bill is a step in the right direction. I look forward to working with the Senate as they begin considering climate change legislation."
A few days earlier, EU Environment Ministers agreed not to extend the scope of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive to cover smaller pig and poultry farms - a move warmly welcomed by farmers.
On issues of pig health, the Taiwanese veterinary authorities informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) on a commercial pig farm in early June. The news came just ahead of an announcement from the OIE/FAO Global Conference on Foot and Mouth Disease, which was held in Asunción, Paraguay last week. There, it was agreed that new national and regional policies and actions need to be given a boost to achieve global control of the disease that contributes to food insecurity and poverty.
And finally, Argentina has reported finding H1N1 influenza in a pig herd - the second country (after Canada) to report an outbreak among its pig population. The source of infection is not yet known.

We have 7 new features this week:
Kansas Scientists Test Noni as a Feed Additive for Weaners
Noni (Morinda citrifolia) included in complex diets at levels of 0.75 to 3.0 per cent improved the performance of weaned pigs, according to Feoli and colleagues at Kansas State University. They reported four experiments in two papers at the Kansas Swine Day 2008. Jackie Linden, editor of ThePigSite, summarises the findings.

Survival of Manure Pathogens in Swine Manure
Ann Huber, environmental microbiologist with the Soil Resource Group in Guelph reported her study into numbers of E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter in pig manure during storage at the 28th Centralia Swine Research Update. Her data enables predictions of storage conditions and times required to achieve significant pathogen reductions prior to field application.
Efficacy of Selected Disinfectants against Porcine Pathogens
Seven chemical disinfectants were tested against 10 species of porcine bacterial pathogens that are common in UK pig units under a range of conditions. The pathogens showed widely different susceptibilities to the different disinfectants. None of the compounds was universally effective. The research was conducted by J.R. Thomson and collegues at Scottish Agricultural College and published by BPEX.
