Editorial: Agriculture Events Ends with a Message of New Growth

On Friday, the doors closed on the UK's premier agriculture event for the last time. The Royal Show had been running for 170 years, but heavy financial losses finally forced it to an end.

One of the key messages of the show was the need to boost the image of British agriculture establishing the recruitment of 60,000 people over the next decade. Without the proper support it may not just be a show that UK farmers lose.

In Canada, the Calgary Stampede, which claims to be the greatest outdoor show on earth, was marked by an industry crisis rally. Pork producers and industry supporters gathered at the event to call upon the government to help the pork industry through tough times.

Representatives of both provincial and federal governments on hand expressed their support for the pork industry, acknowledged recent proposals made by the pork industry and indicated that their people are working to find solutions for the industry across the country.
