Editorial - A Week of Winds Both Fair and Ill

In his Pork Commentary, Jim Long of Genesus estimates that Canadian producers look to be facing a $40.00 per head loss for the next six months - amounting to a nationwide deficit of $2.5 billion. Their neighbours to the south are faring little better. Since September 2007, the US pork industry has lost nearly $4.4 billion, which equates to an average loss of $21.37 per pig over the past 21 months.

The British expression: 'It is an ill wind that brings nobody any good' seems particularly apt this week. Two of the leading pig producing companies - Zhongpin in China and Cherkizovo in Russia - have reported significant improvements in their pork sales in both volume and value terms.

Clearly, genetics companies, Génétiporc and Designed Genetics Inc. have an optimistic view for the future. They have announced a new strategic alliance aimed at marketing their respective products and programmes in targeted Canadian, US and international markets.

Finally, let us all spare a thought for Taiwan's pig producers, who are now known to have lost more than 118,000 animals in the wake of Typhoon Morakot - on top of the tragic loss of human lives. Officials estimate that it will take at least six months for the industry to recover.
