Editorial - Canada's Industry Rescue Plan Will Not Compromise Trade

Canadian industry leaders are seeking to assure others that its federal programme to assist its pork producers in restructuring their industry is being designed in a way that ensures it will not compromise Canada's international trading obligations.

Officials with the Canadian Pork Council and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are in the process of finalising details of a Hog Farm Transition Program that will provide access to interest bearing government backed credit, incentives to help struggling operations transition out of the industry and funding for international pork marketing initiatives.

Two of the world's leading pork processors have announced mixed fortunes in the last week. While Zhongpin is significantly upgrading one of its processing plants in China, Tulip Food Company's board of directors is recommending the closure of its factory in Sdr. Borup in Denmark at the end of December.

Zhongpin Inc. has announced it is to upgrade its pork processing plant at Changge in Henan province with investment of US$6 million in order to boost capacity by 37 per cent. The closure of the Tulip plant is aimed to make production more efficient in line with the Danish Crown action plan published earlier this year.
