Editorial - Pig Industry Looked to China Last Week
Qingdao in China was the focus of the global pig meat industry last week for the World Pork Conference. Chris Harris, Senior Editor of ThePigSite was there and brought us several topical reports.
The President of the International Meat Secretariat, Paddy Moore, opening the conference, explained that the industry is facing three major challenges right now: the economic down-turn, the consequences of the A/H1N1 flu outbreak and questions over sustainability and the environment.
To highlight the second of these challenges, a survey carried out for the US Meat Export Federation found that one-quarter of Chinese consumers believes that the influenza A/H1N1 flu virus can be caught through eating pig meat.
The main message from the vice chairwoman of the standing committee of the 10th National People's Congress in China, He Luli, was that the pig meat, meat and food industries around the world need to establish greater cooperation and partnership to boost global development.
To this end, the International Meat Secretariat set out a seven-point pledge to enhance transparency, animal welfare, food safety and cooperation within the global pig meat industry.
In her presentation to the World Pork Conference, Mary Anne Binnie, the manager of nutrition and food industry relations at the Canadian Pork Council explained that the report from the World Cancer Research Fund that links eating red meat with cancer contains a "significant error". Eating meat, and especially processed meats, does not pose health risks, she said.
