Editorial - Australia's Pork Industry Looks Ahead The Australian industry announced last week that it aims to be carbon neutral within five years. The industry body, Australian Pork Ltd (APL), explained that consumers want to buy sustainably produced food and it sees cutting emissions from pig farms is an important part of that. APL's research and innovation manager says that emissions will be eliminated by introducing new types of feed and making better use of pig waste. APL has also launched its Strategic Plan 2010-2015. Its chairman explained: "The diversity of the industry in our products, in our production systems, in the size, competence and dedication of our producers are assets that we must leverage to their full value. The industry's unity around the thrust of this Strategic Plan 2010–2015, in its adoption and implementation, will be a significant step in that direction." The USDA has published the latest Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report. It reveals that the US inventory of all hogs and pigs on 1 September 2009 was 66.6 million head, a fall of two per cent from 1 September 2008 but up one per cent from 1 June 2009. At 5.87 million head, the breeding herd was down three per cent from last year and also down two per cent from the previous quarter. The market hog inventory, at 60.8 million head, was down two per cent from last year, and there were four per cent fewer sows farrowing during the June-August period than in the same period in 2008. The big news from industry suppliers this week was that Boehringer Ingelheim is set to acquire certain Fort Dodge assets from Pfizer/Wyeth, including pig vaccine manufacturing facilities.
