Editorial: Signs of Green Shoots?

There were faint signs of hope this week that some parts of the pig industry around the world could be turning the corner.

In the US, Purdue University Extension economist Chris Hurt said that while production dropped by two per cent in 2009, next year the drop in production is forecast to be between one and two per cent.

However, he added that improving demand is likely to have a greater impact on prices than the fall in supply.

He added that with falling consumer prices, demand is likely to increase.

The favourable predictions follow a little more bullish feel in the quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report for September.

Meanwhile, in Canada, restructuring of the industry has started.

Producers can now get applications for government backed loans and applications for the Hog Farm Transition Programme are also expected to be available.

In Europe, Poland has seen prices for both pork and poultry meat rise by 10 per cent - the highest of all the seasonal food price rises in the country.
