Editorial - A Bad Week for Pig Health

A number of reports have emerged in the last seven days, raising a number concerns about the spread of potentially serious animal diseases.

Firstly, the Japanese veterinary authority reported finding the H1N1 influenza A virus in a pooled sample of nasal swabs from pigs in Osaka prefecture. Just one per cent of the pigs involved showed some signs of illness.

Then came news that African Swine Fever (ASF) appears to have 'jumped' 2,000 kilometres from previously known cases in wild boar in southern Russia to St Petersburg in the north-west of the country.

And most, recently, outbreaks of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) have been reported in a number of regions in China. In 2007, the disease killed more than 80,000 pigs there.

And finally, some results of a soon-to-be-published report on comparative pig costings in the EU have emerged. The average cost of production in the EU in 2008 was 135.9 UK pence per kilo deadweight – an increase of 24 per cent on the previous year. Most of this rise was attributed to an increase in feed costs, which were 34 per cent higher than a year earlier in sterling terms, although they were up 18 per cent in Euro terms.
