Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial - The Devil is in the Detail
Maintaining good animal welfare regimes on the farm and in the slaughterhouse requires constant vigilance and attention to detail. This was among the key messages from animal welfare expert, Professor Temple Grandin of Colorado State University. She was the keynote speaker at the conference Super Session at the Worldwide Food Expo in Chicago last week.
And following a detailed and global collaborative effort, a first draft of the genome of a domesticated pig has been produced. A red-haired Duroc pig from a farm at the University of Illinois has joined the growing list of domesticated animals that have had their genomes sequenced. The researchers announced their achievement at a meeting at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK today. The results are likely to lead to greater insights in agriculture, medicine, conservation and evolution.
And finally, the shake-down in the international animal health business is also coming down to the details. Pfizer's acquisition of Fort Dodge required some products to be divested, including several that have been acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim. And the merger between Merck and Intervet Schering Plough Animal Health has received official approval from the major regulatory bodies, on condition that significant divestitures are made.
