Editorial: Global Monitoring of the H1N1 Flu Situation

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) stated last week that it is closely monitoring the world animal health situation with regard to infections of all susceptible animals with the pandemic H1N1 2009 virus.

OIE says that regular reports of countries notifying the presence of the pandemic H1N1 2009 flu virus in animals to the OIE show disease surveillance in animals and reporting mechanisms are functioning well, and that the vast majority of OIE Member Countries act in full transparency with the international community.

So far, no evidence has suggested that animals play any particular role in the epidemiology or the spread of the pandemic H1N1 2009 virus among humans. In fact, investigations point to possible human–to–animal transmission in most cases.

Laboratories in the OFFLU network (OIE-FAO joint network of expertise on animal influenza) across the world have been sharing biological material and information. So far, at least, infected pigs have shown only mild signs of disease. Nevertheless, OIE encourages continued surveillance and reporting of the presence of all epidemiological events of significance in animals due to flu viruses.

The OIE statement was brought into sharp focus as reports were received in the last week of outbreaks of H1N1 flu in commercial pig herds in the US state of Indiana and in Taiwan, and two pork samples taken at a Hong Kong slaughterhouse tested positive for the human form of the H1N1 flu virus.
